Come Meet The Winemaker!!!
Brian Dierks

A native of Southern Oregon, Brian was born and raised in Grants Pass and now lives in a small community outside of Rogue River.
If Brian is not tinkering in the winery or his wood shop he can be found adventuring in the wild lands of Southern Oregon. He spends his free time exploring the bike trails and back roads of the Rogue Valley on his mountain bike or road bike.  And of course he loves to enjoy a glass of wine by the fire pit.

Grit Cellars 2022 Rose of Pinot Noir
A delightfully pink wine that boasts a bright and refreshing flavor profile. On the nose, it exudes aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, and watermelon, with subtle floral undertones that add to its overall elegance.
On the palate, it is light-bodied and crisp, with a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. The flavors of juicy red berries are accompanied by hints of citrus, creating a deliciously tart and tangy finish.

Grit Cellars 2019 Syrah Grenache
A wine that showcases the best of both varietals. On the nose, it boasts a complex bouquet of dark berries, black currants, and black cherries, with subtle hints of spice and earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and rich, with a bold and expressive flavor profile that is both intense and elegant. The Syrah contributes to the wine's dark fruit flavors and adds a hint of pepper and smoke, while the Grenache brings a touch of red fruit and a silky texture. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and the acidity is perfectly balanced, creating a smooth finish.

Grit Cellars 2019 Malbec
Displays a deep ruby color and offers aromas of blackberry, plum, and cherry, with subtle notes of vanilla and oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with firm tannins that provide structure and balance to the fruit flavors. The wine's acidity adds freshness and brightness to the finish, which is long and satisfying. This Malbec has a distinctive Oregon terroir, with hints of earth and minerality that complement the fruit characteristics.

Challenge Conformity...

Always up for an adventure and full of entrepreneurial spirit, Joe Moxley and Mike Herrera entered into the wine world with the hopes of blazing a new trail, of merging their two business worlds in a way that hadn’t been done before. Their first partnership focused on the rock & roll world and lifestyle, bringing a signature clothing brand to fans of music.

Now, after eleven years partnering together, they’ve broadened their horizons and brought their love of wine to the forefront. The adventure began when the two went wine tasting together in Southern Oregon where they were introduced to the great local wines and winemakers of area – The “Valley”. With a lot of help and support from this passionate collection of artists along with new partners Bill & Cari Powell, they were able to create a brand new wine they called ANCHOR VALLEY.  The rest is history.

Be sure to check out their tasting room in Jacksonville located below La Fiesta!

Twelve 32 Wines & North Bar Cellars

Picture
Twelve 32
is a small lot focused wine brand headed by aerospace engineer turned winemaker Matt Lemons aka "twinkle eyes".  It all started by helping a friend make wine in his garage.  The address of his house and coincidently ours was 1232.  In 2020, after 8 years of home winemaking, Matt followed his passion into the wine industry and started Twelve 32 in Southern Oregon.  Our wine is made using limited intervention, native fermentations, and no new oak to let the vineyards speak for themselves.

2022 BDG

My 2022 Blanc de Grenache, BDG, is Twelve 32’s first white and the launch of the experimental series. The experimental series is for the more adventurous or one-off wines.  My original idea was a rose, but this wine had a better plan.

To maintain the refreshing acidity, the fruit was harvested from 2Hawk Vineyard at 17.8 brix, just as flavors were developing. The juice was fermented with two yeast strains for additional flavor complexity.  After fermentation I trialed adding a touch of my red Grenache to pink it up.  In the end, I let it be the white wine it wanted to be, and BDG was born. BDG is startlingly aromatic with grapefruit, nectarine, and white flowers followed with wet stone minerality packed in a bone dry, crushable 10.5% package.  Perfect with your seafood, warm summer afternoons, and Tuesday nights.

2022 Confluence
Born of my happiest winemaking accident, Confluence is the rogue blend resulting when a bin of Early Muscat snuck into the party with a group of Chardonnay bins on the way to the press.
The fruit comes from the amazing Layne Vineyard, one of the earliest vineyards in the Applegate Valley and Southern Oregon. Confluence was barrel fermented giving a little extra body but racked to tank before the oak could announce itself. With 17% Early Muscat, the aromatics bring it in this blend. Orange blossom and lemon peel fly from the glass then joined with pear and honeysuckle leading to a laser-focused crisp finish.

This happiest of accidents likely will never be repeated. Don’t miss out on it as only 78 cases of this beauty were made! You will be sipping this all summer long.

North Bar Cellars
Every winery needs an Origin Story: interesting, colorful, truthful if absolutely necessary. So here goes.
In the early 1990’s I was a brand-new associate with a law firm in Detroit. I stumbled on a book called The Game of Wine, an overview of the wine regions of the world. I was hooked!

For the next 25 years I dreamed of becoming a winemaker. Meanwhile: career, children, mortgages—not to mention metro Detroit’s less-than-ideal grape growing climate—all intervened.

Fast forward to 2016. My Love and I had moved to Southern Oregon and after a quarter of a century practicing law I was ready to do something different. My initial idea—an Over 50 Professional Dodgeball League—didn’t work out.
Then it hit me: here I was, living in Wine Country. After earning a degree in vines and wines and working harvests in Southern Oregon and Spain, I was ready. North Bar Cellars was born in 2017.

Now quick! Bring me a beaker of wine so that I may wet my mind and say something clever!

2019 TEMPRANILLO
Applegate Valley, Southern Oregon
PRICE: $32 ***The Weasku Inn has the last 2 cases of this nearly sold out wine***
The 2019 vintage represents the third step in our ongoing exploration of this classic Spanish varietal. The fruit comes from the Steelhead Run vineyard located on the banks of the Applegate River. Long, hot days and cool nights provide the ideal terroir for growing beautiful Tempranillo.

Tasting Notes:
This medium-bodied wine offers blue stone fruits, leather, warm spices, vanilla, moderate tannins, and a long lingering finish. Compared to the previous two vintages, the 2019 throws a slightly softer punch. Think Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Joe Louis!

2020 Vermentino

Tasting notes include: Salty lime, stone fruit, and a grapefruit peel. The Vermentino is rich and silky with a cheery little structural lift at the end, medium acidity and higher viscosity.

On the nose you'll find dusty gravel ribbons that weave through honeycomb and end with an herbaceous lemongrass.

2020 Chenin Blanc

Everybody always wants to talk about and drink Chardonnay. And like… there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that but I really want to encourage people to drink something different. Rather than considering this a lateral move from some of our fan favorites I’d consider this it’s own beast indeed. Close your eyes and imagine plunging into a swimming pool filled with delightful yellow apples and fresh green bosc pears. Chenin blanc can take on many forms depending on where it’s grown and which winemaker is handling it. But for me, the middle ground was truly the sweet spot for this neutral barrel fermented and aged little diddy. Plus, did you check out the label art by my friend David Nowakoski? Freaking sweet. Makes my Pisces heart happy.

2020 Primitivo

I’ve been experimenting with primitivo the past 3 years and I’ve loved every reiteration of it. The idea for me, was to see how I could let this grape ride with elegance and restraint to counter the often beefy and quite frankly overdone (overripe over alcoholic) wines of the warm climate California. I layered whole clusters on the bottom of the fermentation bins and then put destemmed whole berry fruit on top. Early in fermentation I left it alone, then as it started to ferment I did gentle pumpovers to encourage things to really kick off. The rest of fermentation management was 1-2 punchdowns a day.
The goal was to make light to medium bodied, smooth easy drinker that could be slightly chilled and bring some real pizzazz to your backyard summer BBQs. Why should Pinot Noir and Grenache have all the fun?! My favorite descriptor for this has always been melted cherry popsicle. The tannins are still young, fresh and crunchy, while the layers of pomegranate, raspberry and red currant flow through to soften the edges.
The label: I know. Bugs are gross. But this little European Earwig symbolizes the hours I spent picking them off my neck and out of my hair as I sorted fruit on the crush pad and daydreamed about pouring wine I MADE for people. Isn’t it beautifully drawn though? Thank you to artist Michelle Boucher, she simply knocked it out of the park!

The Garvin Family took ownership of what is now the Sam’s Valley Vineyard in the early 1990’s. At the age of 70, Vern Garvin decided to build one more business. In 1999 Vern began the process of starting the vineyard.

Vern and his wife Dorothy had a lot of excitement through the years and lived life to the fullest. Their children, Lee, Roy and Ruth were always involved in the family businesses including a cable company, radio communications and 24 hour answering services. The Garvin children could often be found on the pulling cable, working on the switchboard or doing whatever else was needed to help in building the success the family has always achieved.

Vern was the vineyard manager supported by Dorothy from the initial ground break of the vineyard in 1999. In 2009 at the age of 78, Vern passed away, leaving a legacy of entrepreneurship, stewardship and a blueprint for success to his family and community. Dorothy continued to actively participate in the growth of both the vineyard and the winery until October of 2015 when she passed. It is now up to the future generations.

The part of the second generation: Lee and Ruth are involved with all aspects of the business. Lee juggles his time between his job as Pilot and Purchasing Agent for South Coast Lumber Company in Brookings, Oregon and the family business.  Ruth works full time and manages the marketing and distribution segments of the business and is the liaison for the family as needed.

The third generation: Kelly, Teri and Cory are always willing to help, and are busy creating their own lives. Kelly is a High School teacher and coach at Brookings Harbor High School, Teri is married and has the first of the fourth generation, a little girl, Bailey. She also works for the School District 17c office and is the payroll and benefits manager. Cory is the farmer of the crew.  He is farming in the sea as a commercial fisherman and also helps with vineyard and farming projects.

Big Reds are meant to be enjoyed with family and friends around a dinner table. We believe the varietals we grow at our vineyard are best suited when aged in oak as well as in the bottle. Each wine is released when we feel they are ready to drink, but with the knowledge they have many years in a cellar to reach their full potential.
